Announcements
The Laboratory for Ocean Innovation (LOI) at Texas A&M will be the focus of a special session at the SNAME Offshore Symposium to be held in Houston on March 31, 2026. The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has been working alongside the LOI and the session will cover recent progress in marine research including: ammonia safety and spill concerns in marine environments, an advanced framework for autonomous marine navigation, safety and situational awareness while wearing augmented reality (AR) headgear, and ship surveying using images and movies with software that detects and classifies objects. The presentations will summarize these multi-year efforts and discuss future work.
Vision Statement
The Laboratory for Ocean Innovation aspires to be a global leader in advancing marine and maritime safety, pioneering cutting-edge innovations in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), autonomy, and mixed reality (MR) while promoting sustainable solutions that drive the blue economy and the future of ocean engineering.
Mission Statement
Sponsored by the ABS and housed within Texas A&M University’s (TAMU) Ocean Engineering Department, the Laboratory for Ocean Innovation is dedicated to transformative advancements in marine and maritime safety. ABS, a global leader in maritime safety for over 160 years, and TAMU, home to one of the nation’s top engineering colleges, provide an unparalleled foundation for cutting-edge research and development. Strategically located near the US Gulf, the Laboratory leverages its proximity to vital marine industries to foster innovation in AI, ML, autonomy, and MR. By advancing technology-driven solutions for safety, efficiency, and sustainability, the laboratory plays a pivotal role in strengthening the blue economy while educating future leaders and shaping the future of ocean engineering.
